Beijing, the summer of 1999. A grotesquely burned corpse is found in a city park. Detective Li Yan, devoted to his carrer as a means of restoring the respect his family lost during the Cultural Revolution, knows he cannot solve this one alone.
Luckily, the unidentify cadaver draws the attention of married-to-her-career forensic pathologist Margaret Campbell, escaping her broken past in America and looking to throw herself into an investigation. and before, long, she discovers a bizarre anomaly.
An unlikely partnership develops between Li and Campbell as they follow the resulting lead. A fiery and volatile chemistry ignites: exposing not only their individual demons, but an even greater evil - a conspiracy that threatens their lives, as well as those of millions of others.
